Cardinals continue to research Cassell, likely to retain Hoyer

Matt Cassel was a turnover machine last season in Kansas City before eventually being replaced by Brady Quinn. Cassel will not be back with the Chiefs in 2013 but that has not stopped other teams from doing research on one of Tom Brady’s former backups.

At-least two teams have interest in the 30-year-old Cassel. Ian Rapoport confirmed a previous report that the Arizona Cardinals are taking a deep look at Cassel. The Cardinals would then have an open quarterback competition for the starters job between Cassel and Kevin Kolb.

Another team that could entertain Cassel is Minnesota. He would strictly be a backup there but used to tutor Christian Ponder. Though with 30 turnovers in his last 30 games perhaps the Vikings should scratch that idea.

It is easy to see Cassel struggling in Arizona given his inability to connect with the deep ball but he would be an upgrade over John Skelton.

Of course the Cardinals may already have a strong number two on their roster. Brian Hoyer, another former backup to Brady, is expected to be tendered a contract. Hoyer is seen as a “strong No. 2 who could thrive as a spot starter” according to Jason La Canfora.

Those statements may be a bit overblown considering Hoyer sat as a free agent for 11 weeks before being picked up and then waived by Pittsburgh prior to signing with Arizona.

Overall, he completed 30-of-53 passes for 330 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
