Johnny Knox may not play in the NFL ever again. Knox missed the 2012 season and sources told the Chicago Tribune that the wide receiver is “unlikely to play again.”

Knox sustained a thoracic-lumbar junction fracture-dislocation with neurological involvement back in Week 15 of the 2011 season.

Since that time Knox has had to retrain himself how to walk and get out of bed. On Tuesday the bears terminated the contract of the 26-year-old.

“I admire him for what he has been through and his effort to try to make it back,” Former position coach Darryl Drake said Tuesday. “With something as devastating as what he has gone through, and when you look back at where he was and how far he has come, I’m proud of him.”

Knox, a fifth-round NFL draft pick in 2009 from Abilene Christian in Texas, started 27 of 45 games over three seasons. He had 133 receptions for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns.
