The New York Yankees have agreed to a contract with Travis Hafner. Hafner will make roughly $2 million during the 2013 season while playing primarily as the teams designated hitter.

Signing Hafner provides provides the Yankees with a low-cost gamble.

Hafner has spent the last ten years with the Cleveland Indians but has appeared in more then 100 games once since the beginning of the 2008 season.

From 2004-2007 Hafner was one of baseball’s better power hitters. Since that time he has managed a mere 59 home runs and 214 RBI over 429 games.

Hafner, 35, batted .228 with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs in 64 games for the Indians last season. Cleveland cut ties with Hafner in October, choosing to pay the left-handed hitter a $2.75 million buyout instead of a $13 million option for the 2013 season.
