Rangers not willing to go more than three years with Hamilton

The Texas Rangers and Josh Hamilton are at a standstill. Unwilling to go more than three years the Rangers may lose the 2010 American League MVP.

Hamilton is said to be seeking a contract worth $175 million over seven years. The Rangers offered Hamilton a qualifying offer of $13.3 million which he is expected to reject officially today. This will make the outfielder a free agent and give the Rangers a draft pick between the first and second rounds in Spring’s amateur draft.

The agent for Hamilton, Michael Moye, has spoken with several general managers at the winter meetings according to USA Today. He has not spoken with the GM for the Rangers as both sides have decided to allow Hamilton to test the free agent market. USA Today suggests that the Rangers are looking at options for when Hamilton signs else where and believes that the team will not go more than than three years with the slugger.

“We’ll visit with him probably next week,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says. “Whatever the process that they wanted to go through, they were going to do. I’ll get a sense of that when Mike and I talk.”

There is no shortage of teams who are expected to have interest in Hamilton. Hamilton finished 2012 with a .288/.354/.577 batting line. He launched a career high 43 home runs and drove in 128 RBI while playing in 148 games. It was was most games Hamilton has appeared in since 2008 when he played in 156.
