Next season Matt Kenseth will join Joe Gibbs Racing. While Kenseth has denied that the move to Gibbs had anything to do with his son Ross’ racing career, the move has nonetheless opened up a different set of opportunities for the 19-year-old. One of those opportunities may be with Kyle Busch Motorsports as Busch said he “like to do something with Ross.”
Of course the biggest obstacle for Busch is “trying to get funding.” Busch went on to say that “There’s no backing for some of the drivers that are here right now. The price is obviously cheaper in the truck series. You can start small and grow big. But it’s hard to get interest there.”
To his credit Ross Kenseth is deserving of the interest that Busch and others have in him. Currently enrolled at Clemson University the son of the 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion has won a series of prestigious short track races this year. Kenseth won the Redbud 300 at Anderson Speedway in Indiana in July. In the last month Ross has won the All American 400 at Fairgrounds Speedway (Nashville, TN) and the Winchester 400 (Winchester, IN), he competed against Busch in both events.
Ross’ father has said that his pockets are not deep enough to continue to field teams for his son but has remained supportive and believes his son deserves a chance.
“The funny thing about this sport is I’ve seen Late Model champs come to (NASCAR) and struggle and some guys that you never expected would be competitive run strong,” Matt Kenseth said. “You never know until you get here, but he’s matured and grown a lot as a driver.”
Busch hopes to announce the driver lineup for his truck series team by the final weekend of the NASCAR season at Homestead.
