Jets will not trade Tebow before deadline

The New York Jets will keep Tim Tebow. Despite sitting on the bench for much of the first seven weeks the team has no plans to trade him before the NFL’s trade deadline.

Sources tell the New York Daily News‘ Manish Mehta that in addition to keeping Tebow around, coach Rex Ryan would like to get the backup quarterback/punt protector more involved in the offense going forward.

The Jets have made similar statements in recent weeks. Recently Jets owner Woody Johnson said that Tebow would remain with the Jets for his entire contract.

“Are we going to keep Tebow? Absolutely,” Johnson said at the time. “He’ll be with us for three years … I think he’s going to be a real valuable asset in terms of helping us win games.”

Thus far Tebow’s biggest contributions to the Jets has been on special teams where three times he has successfully converted a fake punt into a first down.

It is unclear what the Jets could actually get in a trade for Tebow. The Jets only gave up a fourth and sixth round pick to get Tebow while they agreed to pay $2.53 million of the bonus’ owed to Tebow. The Jets also received a seventh round pick from Denver.
