The Washington Redskins fan base is probably scratching their heads. Under Joe Gibbs the Washington Redskins won three Super Bowl titles and on Saturday night he went into the hotel of their arch rival for a pep talk.
The pep talk worked as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Carolina Panthers 19-14 in a closely fought game.
Gibbs lives in Charlotte and is the owner of a NASCAR team, Joe Gibbs Racing.
“He was talking about different situations he’s been in and how he fought through them,” Cowboys linebacker Dan Connor said. “He said when you’re in a situation, you think it’s the worst thing ever, but you have to have faith in God and push through it. That was the message. He was unbelievable.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said his players have “immense respect” for the three time Super Bowl Champion Gibbs.
“He came into chapel, and talked about some of his low times,” Jones said. “He spoke about some of the coaching errors. He wasn’t directing it to the team at all, relative to our criticism this week of our sideline coaching decisions, but he talked a little about a couple that bit him.
“The players told me that when they hear Joe Gibbs talk about a few bad decisions, they know anybody can make them.”
The Cowboys improved to 3-3 with the win against Carolina. Despite being one of the NFL’s best passing teams the Cowboys have managed only 18.8 points per game which ranks 25th overall. Next Sunday the Cowboys host the 5-2 New York Giants, a team they defeated in Week 1 by a 24-17 score.
