New York Yankees beat Baltimore Orioles in game 1 of ALDS

The story of the Baltimore Orioles making the playoffs this year, something they haven’t done in fifteen years has been a good one.

Tonight the Orioles played the first game of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. The game was tied 2-2 until the top of the 9th inning when Russell Martin hit a home run off of Orioles closer Jim Johnson.

It seems that Johnson just fell apart from there as the Yankees broke the game open after that.

Raul Ibanez  and Derek Jeter both singled on ground balls, then Ichiro Suzuki singled. Ibanez was replaced on the base by Eduardo Nunez. Bases were loaded when Robinson Cano doubled on a line drive to left field allowing Nunez, Jeter and Ichiro to score.

The Orioles then pulled Johnson out of the game and replaced him with Tommy Hunter.

Hunter made Swisher fly out, but it allowed Cano to score. Hunter was able to get Mark Teixeira out to end the inning but after Johnson gave up five runs in the inning it was just too much for the Orioles to recover from.

Manny Machado and Chris Davis both stuck out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lew Ford doubled on a fly ball, immediately after they took CC Sabathia out of the game. He went 8 2/3 innings giving up 2 earned runs. He was only one strike away from a complete game but the pitching coach decided not to take the chance and went to their closer.

The Orioles dropped the first game of the ALDS to the Yankees with a score of 7-2.
