Jeff Burton never worried about job at RCR

Jeff Burton has steadfastly believed he would drive the No. 31 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing in 2013. The veteran driver recently told reporters that he never worried about being replaced by Kurt Busch or any other driver for next season.

“I never worried about being replaced,” Burton said Tuesday during a Charlotte Motor Speedway media day at the RCR shop. “I never woke up in the morning saying, ‘Damn, I might not drive the 31 car next year.’

Those comments should come as little surprise to anyone who has followed Burton’s career in NASCAR.

Burton has struggled the last two seasons. He is currently 19th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings after finishing 20th last season. The last time Burton visited victory lane in the series was the fall race at Charlotte in 2008.

When asked recently Richard Childress, the RCR team owner, only commented that Burton was signed for the 2013 season.

As a whole RCR has struggled this year. After winning four races last season between Kevin Harvick (3) and Paul Menard the organization has had little success at the Cup level. Harvick is the only driver from RCR who has qualified for the NASCAR Chase the last two seasons while a lack of sponsorship has seen the organization shrink from four teams to three. Ironically the driver RCR let go, Clint Bowyer, is in the Chase.
