Waltrip to buy Red Bull assets, Frye to Hendrick

The days of Red Bull in NASCAR are over. The team struggled though the 2011 season with uncertainty surrounding it’s future. By the end of the year the shop was headed towards shut down.

Former General Manager and Vice President Jay Frye has accepted an undefined role at Hendrick Motorsports. He is expected to act as a consultant.

The remaining assets of the team may be headed to Michael Waltrip Racing.Yesterday Dave Moody reported that Waltrip is working on a deal to purchase assets which include owner points, cars and equipment. It is also possible that MWR could obtain the building that housed Red Bull. There is no word on the amount of money that may change hands in this transaction. Waltrip fields Toyota’s which is what Red Bull’s stable was made of.

If there was any doubt that Red Bull was done in NASCAR this points a final period on it. In a related story Cole Witt has emerged as the leading candidate to drive the #88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet vacated by Aric Almirola as he heads to Richard Petty Motorsports.

Kasey Kahne, who won a race last year for Red Bull, will drive the #5 car at Hendrick Motorsports. Brian Vickers thus far is still seeking a ride at any level inside NASCAR.
