The son of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott was victorious in the 44th annual Snowball Derby. Chase Elliott, a 16 year old driver signed to Hendrick Motorsports, was the winner of the 2011 Snowball Derby.
Key in Elliott’s win was staying out on older tires while cars in front of him took fresh ones during one of the events closing cautions. Elliott crossed the finish line 0.229 seconds ahead of DJ VanderLey. Ross Kenseth, son of Matt Kenseth, finished third while Landon Cassill who nearly won the event last year finished fourth.
“This has definitely been my dream all year long,” Elliott said. “To hold this trophy right here and call it ours is just unbelieveable.”
Johanna Long who won the event last year after giving Cassill a bump was caught up in an early wreck and finished last. David Ragan finished eighteenth while Steve Wallace who won the event in 2004 finished thirty-fifth.
