Robby Gordon made the decision to have Johnny Sauter test and qualify his Cup car at Michigan while the road course ace hit the track in Montreal. Gordon was one of the fastest in practice in Montreal, Sauter one of the slowest in Michigan.

That trend continued in qualifying with Gordon scoring a 6th place start in Montreal while Sauter failed to qualify in Michigan. The failure to make the race at Michigan highlights the uphill problem that Gordon faces going forward.

In a world dominated by multi-car teams and high dollar sponsors Gordon is fielding a single car team with his own Speed Energy on the car.

Sauter failing to make the field at Michigan hurts Gordon in two ways. He loses the payday that he would have netted by making the race and he loses additional ground in his quest to climb back into the top-35 in owner points. In simple terms it’s critical to be in the top-35 in owner points.

In fairness Michigan isn’t one of Robby Gordon’s best tracks. Even when he was more then a back pack driver every week he was at Michigan. Montreal is a race that Gordon wants to win to avenge that 2007 incident he had with Marcos Ambrose. It’s also a race he gets paid sponsorship dollars from Mapei and most importantly it’s a race he can win.

Robby Gordon is going to Montreal to win. Nothing else matters and now with the setback at Michigan nothing else will salvage this weekend for Robby Gordon Motorsports.
