CM Punk to undergo back surgery, UFC debut delayed

So much for former WWE star CM Punk and his UFC debut. The 37-year-old former wrestler whose real name is Phil Brooks will be undergoing back surgery for a herniated disc.

Brooks will have surgery in Chicago on Wednesday due to a herniated disc, MMAFighting.com has learned.

“My back has always bugged me,” Punk told MMAFighting.com. “Figured it was just wrestling sh*t. Turns out it was.

“It got bad enough to the point where I couldn’t do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage, the next day I couldn’t. I’ve been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy … nothing worked.”

If this seems like a wrestling stunt it’s because just Saturday it was announced that Brooks would fight 24-year-old Mickey Gall in his UFC debut after Gall defeated Mike Jackson via a first round rear-naked choke.

Apparently Brooks, or Punk or whatever, was told that he needed surgery prior to Saturday’s events but let the show go on. He will need four to six weeks in order to return.
