\nThe new wave of quarterback deals in the NFL is the ‘pay as you go.’<\/p>\n

One player not interested in those deals is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith.<\/p>\n

“I want to get something that’s right that I’m going to play out, absolutely, and that’s definitely a focus of mine,” Smith told USA TODAY Sports<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Smith is entering his second season with the Chiefs after the team finished the 2013 season 11-5.<\/p>\n

Asked directly Smith indicated he was not interested in deals given to San Francisco signal caller Colin Kaepernick or Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton.<\/p>\n

“We’re on the record. That’s a tough question. Certainly, I think it’s a tough thing. I look at both Andy and Kap and they’re both on their rookie deals. They’re both second-round picks in the new rookie wage scale, so what were their salaries? It’s a very different situation for me.”<\/p>\n

Smith will make $7.5 million in the final year of his current contract. He set career highs with 3,313 yards passing and 23 touchdowns earning a selection as a Pro Bowl sub.<\/p>\n

Contract talks between the Chiefs and Smith have been on and off this offseason. Smith is still hopeful that a new deal will be worked out prior to the start of the regular season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
