Lions receiver Calvin Johnson set a record with 1,964 yards receiving last season. He did so with broken fingers.

Johnson seemed to tell Chris McCosky of the Detroit News that he had broken fingers in addition to his knee issues last season. What is not know is how many fingers were broken. Rumors in February placed the number as high as three.

“Yeah, I had a couple of things here and there,” Johnson said. “Pretty much trying to get them back straight, trying to straighten them things out.”

The news makes Johnson’s 2012 season all the more impressive. Johnson will turn 28 during the 2013 season but is right in his prime years. The Lions should be set on one side of the field for years to come considering Johnson signed an eight-year contract worth $132 million last March. That deal will keep him in a Lions uniform through 2019.

Of course Pro Football Talk says someone close to the situation denies that Johnson broke any fingers.

Three months later and the story goes on…. and on… and on…

“I’m not closing the door,” said Batch to the Pittsburgh Tribune. “I’m open to whatever is out there for me.” Batch is also interested in working in an NFL front office.

Batch also did not rule out taking a position within a teams front office.

“I’d definitely be open to (Steelers GM) Kevin Colbert teaching me his job,” Batch said.

Remember that time that Robert Griffin announced that he was getting married? Fans certainly did as they bought up all of the items on his wedding registry at Bed Bath & Beyond. For those who missed the boat Griffin and long time girlfriend Rebecca Liddicoat will marry in July.

Griffin recently sent out a photo of himself with a bunch of boxes and sent out a message thanking fans for buying the items.

“Thank you to the Fans who are helping buy ALL the items from our wedding registry at Bed Bath & Beyond #AppreciateEverything” Griffin posted.

Naturally the idea of fans buying a multi-million dollar athlete wedding gifts upset some but the Redskins quarterback defended the gifts in a tweet.

I didn’t ask the fans to buy me anything. They found it on their own and decided to get what they could. SMH at all these Debbie downers

— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) May 19, 2013

Judging from the boxes RG3 and his bride to be could not wait to see what was inside. And since we will forget we want to go ahead and wish the couple a nice Wedding Day.

The Cleveland Browns added Brian Hoyer to their quarter back competition this week and last years starter admitted he was a little surprised by the move.

“I was surprised, but that’s the nature of the beast,” Weeden said via CBS Sports. “It’s part of this business, and if you start worrying about it, that’s too much to worry about.”

The Browns signed Hoyer, 27, after the Cardinals cut him in lieu of paying a salary in excess of $2 million. Browns GM Mike Lombardi was a supporter of Hoyer during the quarterbacks time with New England.

In all likelihood Hoyer is a bigger threat to Jason Campbell on the depth chart.

Last season Hoyer made one start for the Cardinals and appeared in another game as a backup. He finished the season 30-of-56 with 330 yards passing, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Michael Vick never was taught how to hold a football until recently. When new Eagles coach Chip Kelly saw the quarterback scramble with the ball he told the 10-year veteran he was doing it all wrong.

“The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,” Vick said in an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic. “So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands. And he was like, ‘Hold it like this.’ And what he told me felt comfortable. I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it.”

In his last 35 games Vick has fumbled the ball 12 times.

It is a little hard to believe that no one had taught Vick how to hold a football but as he says “you’re always a work in progress, and even when you think you know it all, sometimes you don’t. The people who feel like they know everything, they don’t.”

Vick will compete with Nick Foles and Matt Barkley to be the starting quarterback for the Eagles this season.

The Chicago Bears have signed their first-round pick from the 2013 NFL Draft. Kyle Long and the Bears have agreed on a four-year contract. Long was the 20th pick of the draft.

Long is expected to start training came as a right guard but the athletic lineman could also be an option at left guard and right tackle. The Bears were initially criticized for their pick of Long but at-least two other teams were considering drafting him in the first-round.

It will be a tough first season for Long as he will have to match-up against Ndamukong Suh and B.J. Raji twice.

The total value of Long’s deal is roughly $8.2 million according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Lions needed Hill for only one game last season. Hill came off the bench to go 10-of-14 for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Tennessee.

Hill, 33, is one of the leagues better backup options should something happen to starter Matthew Stafford and should be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around. His contract with the Lions is up at the end of this season.

David Garrard made the decision to retire at the age of 35 after his knee made it difficult to play football. Signed to a contract with the Jets the former quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars had hoped to compete for the starting job with Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez.

Garrard told ESPN New York that the Jets have offered him a chance to join their coaching staff as an intern during training camp.

“The Jets offered me the chance to come back if I want to take a shot at that coaching thing with an internship in training camp,” Garrard said. “I told them I’d talk with my wife about it, so I could still work with those guys. It’s definitely something I’m considering.”

Garrard last appeared in an NFL game on Dec. 26, 2010.

New York Jets RB Mike Goodson was arrested early Friday morning, according to a report coming from News 12. Goodson was taken into custody for drug possession and weapon charges.

Sources say Goodson and a companion were found intoxicated in an SUV that was stopped along Route 80 in Denville.

A .45-calibar hand gun was also found in the SUV. Marijuana was discovered to be in his possession once he was transported to the hospital.

Goodson was the passenger in the vehicle. Garrett Evans, who was the driver, is being charged with DUI.

This doesn’t seem like the start the Jets would of liked as they just signed Goodson March 16 to a 3-year $6 million contract. The deal included a $1 million signing bonus, which is the only portion of the contract that was guaranteed.
