In the offseason the San Francisco 49ers told running back Frank Gore that he would ahve to earn his roster spot in training camp after the team drafted Carlos Hyde.
The idea that the 49ers told such a key piece of their offense that he had to earn his roster spot is a bit surprising. However one would also need to consider the age of Gore (31) and his $6.45 million salary.
Members of 49ers front office approached Frank Gore in offseason to tell him his roster spot was in jeopardy, per @RapSheet on Total Access.

Gore is getting two less carries per game and is set to become a free agent. Hyde soon will become the feature back in San Francisco.
