Jimmy Clausen has won the backup quarterback job for the Chicago Bears beating out Jordan Palmer who was cut on Sunday.

Clausen quickly caught the attention of the Bears coaching staff this preseason after sitting out the entire 2013 season following an injury during the preseason. The former Notre Dame standout has had his career fan out after being drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Palmer came in after Jay Cutler in Friday’s preseason game against Seattle going 7-of-10 for 48 yards. Clausen entered after Palmer going 6-of-9 for 36 yards. Neither quarterback produced any points for the Bears who were soundly defeated 34-6.

There currently are 78 players players on the Bears roster with cuts of Palmer, kick returner Darius Reynaud and linebacker Jordan Senn.
