Saints reach extension with Jimmy Graham

Judging Jimmy Graham’s new contract with the New Orleans Saints, it is safe to assume that the two sides must have agreed that he is some sort of hybird tight end/wide receiver.

On Tuesday morning Graham announced that he had reached an extension with the Saints. His new deal is reportedly worth $40 million over four years with $21 million guaranteed.

The Saints had used the franchise tag on Graham claiming he was a tight end, a notion that would have paid him $7.05 million. Of course Graham contested that he was in fact a wide receiver which would have paid him $12.3 million this season.

An independent arbitrator later ruled that Graham was a tight end. While reports leaked that Graham was planning to appeal the decision the Saints and Graham also were said to be working on a new deal.

Getting Graham signed and happy heading into the season is only a good thing for the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees. Graham caught 86 passes for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns during the 2013 season.
