Doctors believe that the aggressive cancer of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly is “very treatable and potentially curable.” The problem is that they will not be able to help him with surgery which had been planned.

Surgery turned out to be “not the best option for Jim,” according to Jill Kelly, the wife of the Pro Football Hall of Famer, wrote in a Facebook update. Kelly’s oral cancer which returned recent is in an area that surgery can not successfully eradicate.

The new plan for the 54-year-old Kelly is rounds of rounds of chemotherapy and radiation according to a Facebook post by his wife Jill.

“Jim Kelly’s condition remains very treatable and potentially curable,” a statement from Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan read. “Our immediate focus is on controlling his pain and beginning the process of eradicating the cancer.”

Kelly led the Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s and was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2002.
