Kicker Adam Vinateri is a free agent. At 41, Vinateri is coming off arguably the best season of his career.
That makes Vinatieri a candidate for the franchise tag according to the IndyStar.
The franchise tag for kickers is set to be $3.4 million, which is what Vinatieri made in 2013. That means he will get a 20-percent bump to $4 million if he is hit with the tag.
I have a hard time believe the Colts and Vinatieri will have to rely on the tag. The kicker seems to enjoy his time in Indianapolis and kicking in doors at-least eight times a season is a plus.
The going rate for established kickers such as Vinatieri falls in the $3.5-$4 million range. Sebastian Janikowski was at the high end of that last season getting a four-year deal worth $19 million while Robbie Gould got a $15 million over the same time frame.
