Falcons: Mike Smith’s job not in jeopardy

The job of Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is not in jeopardy even as the Falcons are 2-7 this season.

General manager Thomas Dimitroff responded to a report from CBSSports.com that the Falcons would consider Jon Gruden at the end of the season to replace Smith.

“Mike Smith is a hell of a football coach; he’s the leader of this team,” Dimitroff told ESPN.com in defense of Smith. “Mike’s going nowhere.”

Under Smith the Falcons are 58-31 with two NFC South titles. Last season the team was 13-3 while making it to the NFC Championship game.

Injuries, primarily to the defense, have wrecked the Falcons season. If the Falcons were to make a change at head coach there figures to be no shortage of teams interested in Smith.
