Vikings cut of punter Kluwe simply a salary move

Chris Kluwe may believe that the Minnesota Vikings released him because of his views on gay rights but the truth is he is not worth the salary. Kluwe was set to make $1.4 million during the upcoming season after performing as a middle of the pack punter for the last two years.

Kluwe knew his time with the Vikings was short when the team drafted Jeff Locke with the 155th overall pick in the recent NFL Draft. Teams simply do not draft punters or kickers unless they have the intention of using them on their active roster.

Last year Kluwe ranked 17th in net punting last season with a 39.7 yard average. Kluwe also ranked 25th in Pro Football Focus’ punter ratings last season.

The incoming Locke was a first-teram All-Pac 12 selection last year and should be a huge asset for the Vikings on kickoffs. Last year 77 percent of Locke’s kickoffs went for touchbacks.
