Elliott forced to rear after engine failure

Chase Elliott lost an engine five laps into Saturday’s practice session at Martinsville Speedway.

The failure will force the driver of the No. 9 Mountain Dew Chevrolet to start from the rear of the field as the Round of 8 starts in the Cup Series playoffs.

“I do know we’ll do a diligent job of trying to figure out what the problem is. The worst thing that can happen is you don’t know why or what broke. If we can find (what caused it), I’m sure we’ll get it corrected.”

Elliott will have 500 Los around the 0.526 mile paperclip shaped track which has proved difficult to pass at times as drivers try to hold the low line along its infamous curbs.
