I was going to talk about Nix’s chances of making the Reds but I couldn’t help but copy and paste a recent article from the AP.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Cincinnati Reds outfielder Laynce Nix has been cited for driving on a suspended license during spring training in Arizona.Police say Nix was pulled over March 10 because he was stopped at a green light at a Scottsdale intersection for at least 15 seconds. Nix reportedly told the officer that he didn’t realize the light had turned green because he was looking down at his phone.
Scottsdale police say a check of Nix’s Texas driver’s license revealed it had been suspended after he failed to appear on a traffic offense from Dec. 23, 2003. Nix told the officer that he didn’t remember getting the ticket.
Police say Nix was cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license and failure to obey a traffic control device. His rental car was impounded for 30 days.
The 29-year-old Nix hit .239 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs last season, his first with Cincinnati. He was offered a minor-league contract in December and invited to spring training, the Reds’ inaugural spring in Arizona.
Laynce Nix played in 116 games for the Reds last season hitting .239/.291/.476. He’s got good power but he’s never really made enough contact to warrant a ton of playing time.
That the Reds brought Johnny Gomes back into the fold hurt the chances of Nix to get huge playing time but with an outfield that reads Gomes, Drew Stubbs and Jay Bruce with Chris Dickerson and Wladimir Balentien in toe there’s plenty of at-bats that could be given to Nix if he can actually hit.
