{"id":895,"date":"2012-12-17T13:39:27","date_gmt":"2012-12-17T18:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tireball.com\/mlb\/?p=895"},"modified":"2012-12-17T13:39:27","modified_gmt":"2012-12-17T18:39:27","slug":"pitchers-to-try-out-new-padded-hats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tireball.com\/mlb\/2012\/12\/17\/pitchers-to-try-out-new-padded-hats\/","title":{"rendered":"Pitchers to try out new padded hats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-896 alignright\" alt=\"paddedhat\" src=\"http:\/\/tireball.com\/mlb\/files\/2012\/12\/paddedhat.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>In an effort to make the game safer, baseball will have a dozen pitchers try out a new padded hat this week.<\/p>\n<p>Willie Weinbaum of ESPN <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/8755180\/pitchers-try-mlb-examined-padded-caps\">reports<\/a> that Major League Baseball has examined caps from Unequal Technologies containing &#8220;CRT&#8221; padding. After some modifications and testing MLB is sending these caps to pitchers for their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>The padding for the caps weigh 4.3 ounces and is one eighth-of-an-inch thick.<\/p>\n<p>Other companies are also in discussions with MLB about hats for pitchers that would protect them in the event of a line drive.<\/p>\n<p>One event that raised awareness to the safety of pitchers happened in September. It was then that a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar struck Brandon McCarthy in the right side of the head.
