Sweeney was unable to make the Red Sox roster for Opening Day and did not want to accept an assignment to Triple-A.<\/p>\n<p>This spring Sweeney made 52 plate appearances but managed just a .217\/.308\/.239 line.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney, 28, spent last season with the Red Sox playing in 63 games.
