Overbay, 36, had been hoping to win a roster spot with the Red Sox after signing a minor league deal in late January.<\/p>\n<p>While Overbay did not make the Red Sox there are other teams that the left handed hitter could sign with before the season starts.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees and Brewers both figure to be interested in Overbay. New York will begin the season without a handful of players including first basemen Mark Teixeria. Milwaukee will start the year without their first basemen as well and are currently planning to use Alex Gonzalez at the position.<\/p>\n<p>Had Overbay not been granted his release from the Red Sox he could have opted out himself or taken a minor league assignment which would have paid him $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Overbay had 41 at-bats this spring for the Red Sox but compiled just a .220\/.327\/.341 line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Boston Red Sox released first basemen Lyle Overbay on Tuesday morning.
