The deal replaces Upton&#8217;s existing contact which he could have opted out of after Saturday night. The average annual value of the contract is $21.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Upton&#8217;s old deal which was signed by the Tigers had four years and 88.5 million left on it and included an opt-out clause ($22.125 million aav). The All-Star posted a career-best .901 OPS with 35 home runs and 109 RBI this season. <\/p>\n<p>According to Bill Shaiklin the new deal simply added a fifth year on Upton&#8217;s deal at $17.5 million.
