The captain is back. Derek Jeter will return to the New York Yankees for Thursday’s game against Kansas City. Initial reports had Jeter returning for the Yankees weekend series against Minnesota.

The news has since been confirmed in a statement from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Jeter, 39, had been playing rehab games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre leading up to a return to the Yankees.

The Yankees shortstop has not played a game since fracturing his left ankle in Game 1 of the ALCS against Detroit last October.

Last season Jeter hit .316/.362/.429 in 159 games for the Yankees and added 15 home runs, 58 RBI and 99 runs scored. It is unclear if he will start tonight at shortstop but he will undoubtedly man his position going forward.

Edwin Nunez had been at the top of the Yankees depth chart at shortstop. Nunez was hitting .211 for the season.
