The Oakland Athletics have signed free agent Billy Butler to a three-year deal worth $30 million.
Butler now will be utilized in some way by the Athletics but whether it is at first base or designated hitter remains to be seen. Given how expensive his deal is it is unlikely that the Athletics only see him as a platoon player.
It is a nice deal for the 28-year-old Butler who had his $12.5 million option for 2015 declined by the Royals.
Butler hit just .271/.323/.379 with nine home runs and 66 RBI during a down 2014 season.
