San Diego padres third baseman Chase Headley believes he will be ready for Opening Day.
Headley will be sidelined for the next two to three weeks with a right calf strain but the 29-year-old does not envision needing a lot of onfield action this spring to be ready for the start of the season.
“If I can get 15 to 20 (at-bats) from both sides, that’s pretty close to what I need,” Headley said, via San Diego Union Tribune. “If it progresses the way that I hope – and I think that it will – then I should be fine. We should have plenty of time. The last thing we want to do, though, is have it become a lingering thing. So even when we think it’s ready, we might give it a day or two.”
Headley will look to improve on a .250/.347/.400 line from 2013 that saw him hit 13 home runs and 35 doubles while producing 50 RBI in 141 games.
