Victor Martinez would like to remain with the Detroit Tigers beyond 2014 but understands that with other high profile players on the roster that will be difficult.
“I want to stay here, yes,” Martinez said at TigersFest, via Detroit News. “But they have a lot going on. They have Scherzer; they have Miggy.”
Now 35, Martinez will operate primarily as the DH for the Tigers in 2014. He will make $12 million in the process.
“But you know what, man?” said Martinez. “I want to take this opportunity to thank the Tigers’ organization and all the fans, because when I had choices of where to go when I was a free agent, I came here because I felt it was the best chance to win.
The Tigers will look to return to the playoffs again this season under first-year manager Brad Ausmus.
