Mariners re-sign Oliver Perez to one year deal

The Seattle Mariners will bring back relief pitcher Oliver Perez for the 2013 season. The left hander and the team have agreed on a one year deal worth $1.5 million.

Last season Perez worked out of the Mariners bullpen exclusively. The 31-year-old should operate in a similar capacity next season. In his first season with the Mariners Perez had a 2.12 ERA, 1.25 WHIP. In 29 2/3 innings of work Perez had a 24/10 K/BB ratio.

How close will Perez be to these numbers in 2013 is anyone’s guess. Control is always a concern with Perez. He walked only three batters per nine innings last season but those expecting big things should be cautious. It was only the second time in Perez’s ten year major league career that he had a BB/9 under four.

Should Perez post similar numbers next season the Mariners may opt to trade him prior to the deadline.
