Jeff Gordon winning at Brickyard 400 would boost title hopes

Jeff Gordon driver of the #24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet for Hendrick Motor Sports has raced in 670 races, accumulated 402 top tens, 289 top fives, and won 85 times. Gordon has won the Daytona 500 three times and the Sprint Cup Series championship four times in his 18 year career in Cup racing.

These records put Jeff Gordon third on the wins list only behind legends David Pearson and Richard Petty.

Gordon hasn’t won a championship since 2001. The closest he has finished was 2nd behind team mate Jimmie Johnson in 2007. He won just one race from 2008-2010. Last year he broke though with three victories and many fans of Gordon were hopeful of another championship run. Gordon stumbled once the chase started and finished 8th overall.

Gordon has missed the chase just once since it’s inception, 2005. Failing to make the Chase that season forced Gordon to his lowest finish in the overall standings (11th) since his rookie season. (14th)

This season Gordon is again in danger of missing the Chase. Gordon has seen poor luck coupled with bad runs which have doomed him to 17th in the standings. The only thing that can save Gordon’s hopes of a title this season is to win a race and squeak into the Chase via a Wild Card spot.

Fortunately for Gordon he is starting to turn this season around. With finishes of sixth or better in four of the last five races, Gordon has moved himself  just 21 points behind Kyle Busch for the second Wild Card spot. However, the Wild Card spots are an ever changing target and drivers ahead of Gordon could even block his path to the Chase even if he does win a race and finishes higher then Busch.

Jeff Gordon is one of the best drivers when it comes to this weekends race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He has won at the track four times since its inception in 1994.  Last year he had a late race charge but ended up finishing second to Paul Menard. There would be no better place for Gordon to pick up his first win of the season then at the Brickyard.
