Bowyer could be third driver at MWR

While Clint Bowyer’s contract talks with Richard Childress Racing were cooling off, they were heating up with Michael Waltrip Racing. While no one is saying everything about the possiable signing of Bowyner by MWR, we have enough pieces of the puzzle.

Michael Waltrip said that he had positive talks with Bowyer and a substantial sponsor. To me that sounds like Bowyer is set to join the likes of David Reutimann and Martin Truex in a Toyota Camry over at MWR.

5 Hour Energy was looking to lock onto Bowyer when talks were going well at RCR. Rusty Wallace said that the company was leaving his Nationwide team and was heading for Cup and that they liked Bowyer. Wallace went a step further saying that they were looking to sponsor 20 races next season at the Cup level.

Bowyer and Waltrip have had a history of wrecks at Bristol. In 2008 Bowyer said that “Michael Waltrip is the worst driver in NASCAR period.” But would he be the worst boss?

MWR wasn’t Bowyer’s first choice. His first choice was to stay at RCR and he hoped to use Carl Edwards resigning at Roush Fenway as a basis for his new contract. The problem is that while Bowyer is a threat on many of the short tracks, Edwards is a far better driver right now and he has the ability to win almost anywhere.

Bowyer was linked briefly to Roush Fenway as a replacement in the #6 for David Ragan but if a move is made it’s likely to be Rickey Stenhouse who will fill the seat. Earnhardt Ganassi also got briefly involved but it’s unclear how far those talks got.

Bowyer missed the Chase this year, the second time in the last three years he has done so. He’s won 4 races during his Cup career which had been spent entirely with RCR.
