Daytona misfortues aplenty, doesn’t affect points

With the talk of the new point system you’d think everyone was in a big hole if they had trouble on Sunday. You’d be wrong. The sheer number of “Chase contending cars” involved in incidents has prevented any serious title contenders from being too far back.

Five time Champion Jimmie Johnson, former Champions Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth had trouble to start. Other drives who made the Chase last season who had trouble on Sunday included Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton. Throw in the misfortunes of Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano and even Dale Earnhardt Jr and you can’t help but see this thing is far from over for anyone.

Even though who avoided damaging days didn’t exactly distance themselves. Tony Stewart finished 13th and Mark Martin came across the line 10th.

Much will be made about overcoming the point hole from Daytona but the truth is avoiding the pitfalls of the upcoming weeks will be more important.
