Alan Embree signs minor league deal with Red Sox

Atlanta Braves vs Colorado Rockies in DenverThis isn’t quite the same as Nomar Garciaparra signing with the Red Sox and then retiring but it could have the same result. Embree, the man who recorded the final out of the 2004 World Series, signed a minor league deal to compete for a spot in the Red Sox bullpen.

He wasn’t very good in Colorado last season finishing with a 5.84 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP before he broke his leg in July. At 40 years of age the left hander is still left handed and capable of getting a batter or two out at a time which puts him in the same category as also left handed Brian Shouse as they battle for a spot in the pen.

Had I not been so quick to finish my non roster invitee reports I may have gotten the chance to write about Embree, who despite his up and down career has been a player I’ve enjoyed to watch at times.

If Embree fails to make the Red Sox it’s possible he may retire though we’ll have to wait and see for that.
